Screen printed picture book
Text, images, concept by Otto
The story a science fiction about a narrowboat traveling into outer space. The story begins in Islington London, where the boat enters the tunnel and instead of emerging at Kings Cross, it finds itself amongst stars. There are perhaps echoes of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, which is at one point also located at the Regents Canal.
The inspiration for this book comes from my life on a boat in London between 2004 to 2010. Islington tunnel is very long and traveling through it is a surreal experience.
Galactic Narrowboat is the second in the series of ‘Crosscut-fold’ booklets after Folding Space Ship.
I invented the Crosscut-fold technique after observing tulip leaves and the way they fold in on themselves. The format is basically a diagonal Leporello, which, when folded, fits neatly into a postcard sized format.
You will find that no page is the same and all the angles are strange. It allows for exciting layouts and odd format illustrations. Also there are windows and hidden areas in the book, providing even more opportunities for unusual storytelling.
