Historic illustration potfolio


The following are examples of regular illustration work for major publications in the last 2 decades. I think it is fair to say that I was very much an illustrator of the internet revolution. With that in mind it is no coincidence that my method of working is derived directly from the Russian Constructivists who were providing the visual backdrop to the political revolution in Russia 100 years earlier.

The Economist

In early illustrations for the Economist I used a red and black 2 colour method in the tradition of the red and black design of the magazine before turning full colour. The illustrations were made digitally with collage and shapes.

One of those illustrations was featured in 'Hand to  Eye' by Angus Hyland and Roanne Bell, Laurence King Publishing, 2003

The series below was for an issue about the Genome in the year 2000. Included was a front cover, inside cover and illustrations for the Survey

The Independent


weekly illustrations for the essay in The Independent on Saturday Magazine during 2000 and 2001 for Art Director Gary Cochran and Danielle Campbell, later Steve Petch

With the rapid development of digital media and web communications in the early 2000s I was asked to contribute with conceptual illustrations for many publications including LeMonde.

My illustrations were popular in the educational sector as the conceptual style in the tradition of Russian Constructivism was effective at communicating systematic changes.

My illustrations were sourced initially by Gina Cross both for the Private Lives column as well as Political Comments.

Images were made digitally in 'cut-out' fashion, limited to a two colour palette.

weekly column for political comment page in the Berlin newspaper Der Freitag between 2008 and 2015 for Art Director Janine Sack.

My introduction as a Freitag illustrator was integral to the 2008 redesign of the paper in the style of the Guardian.
